Thembalami means My Hope and this is a true reflection of what Rand Aid offers at its Care Centre, as residents have the opportunity to find new hope and meaning in a caring environment. The Thembalami Care Centre is situated in spacious grounds and caters for 180 older persons who are in dire need of 24 hour nursing care.

The accommodation consists of double rooms or single rooms that are all north facing. Two double rooms are linked to a shared bathroom and all single rooms are en-suite. These may also accommodate couples comfortably. The upstairs rooms have access to a veranda whilst the ground floor rooms lead directly onto the garden.

Residents are encouraged to create a homely atmosphere by bringing items of sentimental value, such as a favourite picture or even a comfortable chair for the veranda. Visits by family and friends are welcomed and regular family days are organized to increase contact with loved ones.

Residents are encouraged to remain active for as long as possible, therefore a range of activities, that include regular outings, entertainment and participation in crafts and hobbies are offered.

Busy Hands and Warm Hearts:

ThembalamiBig-hearted best describes a group of Lyndhurst senior citizens.

Residents of Inyoni Creek retirement village proved that a little goes a long way when they got to work to ensure that the less privileged seniors at nearby Thembalami Care Centre can now enjoy the benefits of an occupational therapy department.

Thembalami, meaning 'My Hope', cares for people of limited means who are in need of 24-hour care. It is run by non-profit organisation Rand Aid.

Without an occupational therapy (OT) room, therapist Ros Edelman was forced to work from the noisy women’s dining hall, carting her equipment to and fro. Things changed however, when Inyoni resident Val Bartram approached Thembalami manager Elize Raath, asking what Inyoni could do to enrich the lives of those living at the care centre.

An inside room that previously housed a large pool table was earmarked as the new OT room and soon underwent a metamorphosis. Now bright yellow and blue, it has become a lively gathering point for residents to relax, listen to music and socialise while putting the wonderful material that was donated to good use.

"Fabric painting, jewellery making, teddy bear crafting and knitting are enjoyed and residents feel a great sense of satisfaction if they manage to sell any of their work," says Elize,

"Inyoni Creek residents involved their children, extended family members and contacts to source what was needed to create our OT room. I am overwhelmed by everyone's kindness and do not think that the donors know quite how much their efforts mean to the residents of Thembalami. You have not only showered us with love but have boosted the morale of both residents and staff members."
